The test will usually last for about 35 to 40 minutes and you will be asked to drive on a variety of roads, and can expect to demonstrate the following
- normal stops
- an angle start (pulling out from behind a parked vehicle)
- a hill start
- you may be asked to perform an emergency stop
You will need to demonstrate that you can reverse the vehicle safely, and perform just one of the following manoeuvres:
- reverse round a corner
- turn in the road
- reverse parking - either into a parking bay or parallel parking at the side of a road
If you are asked to perform an emergency stop, remember what your instructor talked about, and you practiced - the Mum routine - just keep it in mind when the car comes to a stop and the examiner says - move on when you're ready!
You will also be required to undertake about 10 minutes of independent driving. You will do this by following
- traffic signs
- a series of directions
- a combination of both
To help you understand where you're going when following verbal directions, the examiner can show you a diagram. If you need a reminder of the directions your examiner will do this without you incurring a fault. You need to demonstrate that you can make your own decisions safely, and asking for confirmation about the route you should take at an appropriate time. Your test result won't be affected if you go off the route you've been given, unless you make a driving fault. If you make a wrong turn the examiner will assist you back to the route you should take and then you will continue with the independent driving.
